FAQs

🚭 Can I adopt if I smoke?

Smoking outside is fine. Smoking inside is not. It damages birds’ lungs and shortens their lives. If you smoke indoors, adoption will be denied—no exceptions. (Our founder smoked for 20 years—always outside. We get it. Still a no.)

🏡 Do I need to own my own home?

You don’t have to own your home, but you must be the primary decision maker living there. Roommates or family members need to be fully on board with the adoption. No "asking forgiveness later" situations, please.

🔞 Is there a minimum age to adopt a parrot?

Yes. You must be 21 or older to adopt anything bigger than a cockatiel. If you’re younger but think you're ready, reach out—we’ll evaluate it case by case. But keep in mind: parrots are not starter pets.

📝 What is the return policy?

All adopted birds must be returned to us if things don’t work out. You cannot rehome, resell, or give them away. No exceptions. Adoption fees are non-refundable, but we can convert it into a tax-deductible donation.

🏘 Can I adopt a large bird if I live in an apartment?

In most cases, no. Macaws, cockatoos, and loud conures are not apartment-compatible. You’ll get complaints, and the bird will come back stressed. Let’s find you a match that works for your space.

🎁 Can I adopt a bird as a gift for someone else?

Nope. Birds aren’t presents. The person responsible for the bird must go through the application, interview, and approval process themselves. Want to help? Cover their adoption fee once they’re matched.

🥗 What do I need to feed the bird?

No seed diets. Period. Pelleted diets are required for long-term health. Approved brands:
- Higgins inTune
- Harrison’s
- Tropican
- Roudybush
- TOP’s
- Lafeber’s

Also include variety—fresh foods, chop, and occasional healthy treats.

🛒 What do I need to have ready before adopting?

Before your appointment, you'll need:
- Appropriately-sized cage
- Toys, perches, food
- Safe setup ready to go

We usually have affordable cages for sale—just ask!

🐾 Can I adopt if I have other animals?

Absolutely. We’ll just make sure they’re all well cared for. Our founder has 4 dogs, a cat, jumping spiders, a saltwater tank, a leopard tortoise, and a full parrot collection. You're in good company.

💰 Can I get a discount?

Nope. Every bird—whether fully feathered or plucked, young or old, abled or special needs—deserves the same shot at happiness. They all eat, destroy toys, and need vet care. We don’t do haggling. Please don’t ask.

📍 Can I visit the rescue?

You can only visit the rescue if you’re actively volunteering or have completed the adoption process and been invited. We’re not open to the general public—for the safety of birds and humans alike.

🚫 Why wasn’t I approved?

We don’t deny people lightly. If we say no, we’ll tell you why—and if you’re willing to address it, we’re open to revisiting the decision. It’s not personal. It’s about the birds.

ADOPTION STEPS

  1. Fill out the application

Scroll all the way down on this page to complete your adoption application.

  2. Message us on Facebook

After you apply, send us a message at facebook.com/birdsandbeaks to let us know. Your interview will be done in Messenger and cover your animal care history, household, and species knowledge. No Facebook? Send us a follow up email asking for a text message interview with a textable phone number and we’ll interview via text.

  3. Send us a video walkthrough of your home

We’re not expecting a designer showcase—just show how you live and care for your space. Send short (1-minute) video clips through Messenger.

  4. Purchase species-appropriate supplies

Before your visit, you’ll need to prep a cage, perches, toys, and approved food. We often have cages available for sale at affordable prices, but typically do not provide toys or perches. Our team will check that you're ready before inviting you out.

  5. Provide a copy of your driver's license

This helps us protect the rescue and our team. You'll get to meet and interact with the birds—once you bond with one, that’s who you’ll be approved to adopt.

  6. Sign the contract and take your bird home

Once you're approved, sign the adoption contract and start your new adventure together. 🎉

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT ADOPTION FEES

We keep our adoption fees way lower than what you’d pay in a pet store—not because the birds aren’t valuable, but because they’re not for profit. That said, the fees help keep the lights on and the food bowls full, so they’re necessary.

Heads up:

  • Digital payments (Venmo, PayPal, Apple Pay, cards) add a 4% processing fee

  • Cash = no extra fees

  • No checks for adoptions or cage sales. Period.

Rare or high-demand species are priced individually, and all fees are subject to change without notice.

❓What if this bird ends up hating me?

You’ve got 60 days to make sure it’s a good match. If things don’t work out—and it’s not because “they’re loud” or “I got bit”—you can switch your adoption fee once to a different bird at the rescue.

If that second bird doesn’t work out, it’s probably not the bird.

In that case, your adoption fee becomes a donation. We’ll gladly provide a tax-deductible receipt.

Important: If your adopted bird ever needs to be rehomed—for any reason—they must come back to us. That’s in your signed contract and yes, it’s legally binding.

No reselling. No giving them away. No “oops, lost track.” We exist to protect the ones who come through our doors.
