VOLUNTEER
Birds don’t save themselves. We need hands, hearts, and a little elbow grease.
CURRENT NEEDS
Volunteer hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am–2 pm. You don’t have to stay the full four hours, but all shifts happen inside that window — we’re not able to accommodate volunteers outside of those times right now.
Sundays are a quick in-and-out from 10–11, which gives the flock what they need and us the illusion of a day off.
Schedule Your Volunteer Shift
Once you’ve filled out the Volunteer Application, you’ll get access to our scheduling link. Moving forward, you’ll always use that same link to sign up for shifts.
We accept up to 4 volunteers per shift outside of our core team. If a time isn’t showing, it’s already full. You can schedule up to 14 days in advance.
Please only book shifts you can commit to — grabbing a spot and not showing up takes that opportunity away from someone else and leaves the flock short on care.
Volunteering FAQs
If your main goal is adoption, please go through the adoption process first. Volunteering is wonderful for the birds, but it doesn’t tell us whether your home is suitable. We don’t want anyone to fall in love during chores only to find out later that they can’t be approved — that’s painful for you, for us, and for the bird.
Volunteering should be about helping and learning. If you’re serious about adoption, start with the application so expectations are clear from the beginning.
Yes. We’ll train you. No experience needed — just a willingness to learn and follow instructions.
Absolutely. If adoption is your goal, complete the adoption process first so expectations are clear. But if your goal is to learn, help, and spend time around parrots, you’re in the right place.
Yes — once daily chores are complete. Volunteers can spend time socializing with the birds after tasks are finished. Think of it as the “reward” for keeping the rescue running. We keep the balance by focusing on enrichment and play, but avoid deep bonding so the birds stay emotionally ready for their forever homes.
Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, closed-toe shoes, and no dangly jewelry or scarves. Curious beaks test everything — so leave fragile fabrics and shiny accessories at home.
Volunteers must generally be 18 or older. Kids ages 12 and up may sometimes be approved with permission from the Director — but only if accompanied by a parent. Parrots are powerful, and this is a working rescue environment, so safety is always the priority.
Nope — for everyone’s safety. All birds at the rescue go through quarantine and medical checks. Outside pets are not allowed on site.
Yes, but clear snacks with the rescue team first.
Bird-approved: washed grapes; washed and sliced mango, papaya, cantaloupe; washed pomegranate; washed snap peas, carrots, broccoli, spinach greens; mandarin oranges; Christine’s Chop Shop birdie breads and snacks.
Dog-approved: organic crunchy treats; yak cheese chews; leftover cooked meats.
Not allowed: birds get no chips or crackers; dogs get no rawhide.
Yes! We welcome one-time volunteers as well as ongoing commitments. Every bit of help makes a difference.
