ARTIE
ARTIE
Congo African Grey
This is Artie.
This is what we know about him:
Artie is a 21 year old Congo African Grey who definitely prefers men. He’s a bird that the person who earns and keeps his trust will need to be diligent about setting boundaries for what is expected of him and help him learn appropriate interactions with people.
He was owned by a female, and after sexual maturity developed a distaste for her. He bonded to her ex husband and then current husband.
Based on the information that we have of Artie’s past, there were a lot of behaviors that he exhibited based on the bad decisions of the humans that were responsible for him, and as such, we’re not sure they’re worth even mentioning here as anyone who has done a single google search on parrot care would understand that any of those behaviors are caused by humans and their lack of teaching the bird a single thing. (Example: Bit the tongue of a female human handling him to the extent that it split her tongue. We’re going to call Human Foul on that one, as what in the actual hell was her tongue doing in, near or on his beak?? It’s that sort of thing that makes us question any negative behaviors in his past, because if you do stupid things, ((and we know this will come as a shock to you all)), you get stupid prizes.
Our experience with Artie is that he’s a sweet, docile bird with a bit of a nervous edge to him as he learns to earn trust. He loves all of our male volunteers and is pretty cool with all of them handling him.
Age: 21

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
We will only consider a male caretaker for Artie. He deserves a happily ever after.
***Information that is universal to every bird:
1) Birds are typically not family animals. They usually choose a favorite and at best you can expect them to tolerate everyone else.
2) Birds are not great with kids, dogs, other birds, and are not cuddly with everyone, nor can they really be trained to be. Birds are flock animals, who are social creatures that need to be in a communal area where they can see the rest of the family, or you may eperience serious vocalization and behavior problems. We’ve never met a bird who is great with kids, but we have met kids who are respectful of birds.
3) Birds bite. But, you shouldn’t “take the bite”. If you’re getting bit, you haven’t earned the trust of the bird, and are pushing the bird past his/her limits. You must figure out what the bird needs, and make what you’re asking of the bird more attractive than what they are already doing.
4) Birds are not “dominance” based creatures. Your only option for birds is to earn their trust. If they are, say…on top of a cage and don’t want to come down, that is where they feel safest, not a dominance thing. They are not trying to exert dominance, they just don’t want to come down. Your job as a parrot owner is to figure out what you can do to help them trust you, and whatever you are asking to be more attractive than what they are already doing.
5) NEVER send money over the internet for adoption with any individual or organization for the adoption of an animal you have not met in person. That is almost always a scam.
