BIRDY

Birdy

Quaker Monk Parakeet (Green)

Meet Birdy

Green Quaker Parrot • Estimated Age: 10+ • Sassy, Smart, and Strong-Willed

Birdy is a Green Quaker with bold feathers and an even bolder personality. He was found in a tree and brought to a shelter, then adopted by his current family about 10 years ago. While he didn’t come with much training, it’s clear he’s clever, observant, and full of potential—just the kind of bird who insists on doing things his way.

He talks, makes all kinds of funny sounds, dances to music, and has a long-standing grudge against his toys (which he regularly destroys with gusto). He enjoys flying around, bothering the dogs, and keeping the humans on their toes. He’s also developed some charming quirks—like cleaning his cage with his own feathers just for fun.

Here at the rescue, Birdy has shown us that with a little trust building, a respectful approach, and the freedom to come out on his own terms, he can be very cooperative. He’s been stepping up reliably and engaging in interactions much more willingly—especially when he feels like he’s in control of the situation.

Birdy doesn’t love being handled out of the blue, and he has a few strong dislikes (wet or mushy food, vacuums, and anything snake-like). But give him some structure, a sense of safety, and some good snacks, and he truly shines.

His previous family cared for him deeply but recognized that he might thrive in a home with more parrot experience. They’d love to see him with someone who understands birds like Birdy—those independent, hilarious, slightly chaotic souls who become the most rewarding companions when you earn their trust.

***Information that is universal to every bird:

1) Birds are typically not family animals. They usually choose a favorite and at best you can expect them to tolerate everyone else.

2) Birds are not great with kids, dogs, other birds, and are not cuddly with everyone, nor can they really be trained to be. Birds are flock animals, who are social creatures that need to be in a communal area where they can see the rest of the family, or you may eperience serious vocalization and behavior problems. We’ve never met a bird who is great with kids, but we have met kids who are respectful of birds.

3) Birds bite. But, you shouldn’t “take the bite”. If you’re getting bit, you haven’t earned the trust of the bird, and are pushing the bird past his/her limits. You must figure out what the bird needs, and make what you’re asking of the bird more attractive than what they are already doing.

4) Birds are not “dominance” based creatures. Your only option for birds is to earn their trust. If they are, say…on top of a cage and don’t want to come down, that is where they feel safest, not a dominance thing. They are not trying to exert dominance, they just don’t want to come down. Your job as a parrot owner is to figure out what you can do to help them trust you, and whatever you are asking to be more attractive than what they are already doing.

5) NEVER send money over the internet for adoption with any individual or organization for the adoption of an animal you have not met in person. That is almost always a scam.
