Meet Hans

Hans has a curious little face, a fondness for bells, and a playful side that’s awfully easy to fall for. A stainless-steel spoon is apparently worth a closer look. Watch his video and you’ll see a little of that sweet personality peeking out.

His prior family estimated his age at 25–30 years old. That said, Hans has an open import band from being wild-caught. We don’t have documentation of his actual age, and without that documentation, there’s no way to determine how old he is.

His previous family said he liked talking with them and ringing his bell. When he wanted head scratches, he would put his head against the cage to ask. That’s a pretty lovely little invitation.

Hans is looking for a patient person who will enjoy getting to know him and let the relationship grow at his pace. His previous family said being held and stepping onto a stick weren’t part of his routine, so the hands-on part will take time.

There’s a sweet bird here with his own interests, his own ways of asking for attention, and a person still to find. We think he could become somebody’s everything.

How he got here

Hans came to Birds and Beaks because his prior family was moving and couldn’t bring him with them.

How it works: Apply online → interview → home walkthrough video → approval and an invitation to visit the rescue → visit and handling in Battle Creek, Michigan. If all goes well, you may be approved to adopt that day. An adoption contract is required.

Our usual adoption area is about 350 miles; exceptional farther homes may be considered if willing to travel. Visits are by approved appointment. We never ship birds. Companion adoption only; no breeding. There is no application fee.

The honest stuff, true for every bird:

  • Birds usually pick a favorite person and tolerate everyone else.
  • They’re not great with kids or dogs, and need to be where the family is, rather than in a separate room.
  • All birds bite. Pay attention to their boundaries and earn their trust.
  • It’s about trust, not dominance.

Scam warning: Never send money online for an animal you haven’t met in person.

Meet Sweets

Sweets needs a home. She needs somebody who will love her, and help her understand what being loved entails.

She wants to see what you’re doing and be part of it. She can be nervous about getting started, but once she’s out with me, she settles in. Here she is hanging out on my arm and letting me scratch her head.

She needs someone willing to take their time, earn her trust, and help her discover all the good things humans can do. Go slow, and listen to what she’s trying to communicate.

How she got here

Sweets’ previous owner was a breeder who became terminally ill and could no longer care for her animals. After she passed away, her family contacted us and asked us to take in the birds.

Many birds came to us from that home, and most had really great personalities and dispositions, even though they had been breeding pairs. We’re getting to know Sweets as her own bird, and helping her discover life with someone who will take the time to listen.
