HANS

Hans

White Crowned Pionus

This is Hans.

This is what we know about him:

Hans is a 12 year old White Crowned Pionus, who has a silly, interested, infectious little personality on him. He is hilarious, and when you get to the trust zone with him, he’s very, very loveable, and likes to hang out and be with his person.

That said, Hans trust is not easily won. He is dubious of all new people, males and females alike and while he wants desperately to bond with a person, he doesn’t trust easy, so you will work for it.

Here, we turn his aggressions into games to take the “mean” out if it, and help him settle in and enjoy hanging out with us. In the video attached you’ll see him and how he interacts.

We think the right person will be able to earn his trust and do some exercises to help him rewire his brain from nervous and scared to confident and content.

Please be aware that he WILL bite, and he WILL break skin. Your whole job is to work through the issues with him WITHOUT getting bit, so that will mean watching his body language, and figuring out ways to take him out of his comfort zone, while continuing to earn his trust. It’s a delicate balance, and one that is fairly easy to achieve if you pay close attention to the clear signals he’s laying down for you.

Age: 12

Sex: Male

Prefers: Males or Females? Not sure it matters

Other Bird Aggressive? We don’t allow him to interact with other birds.

Adoption Fee: $1000

Cage Available: Affordable used cages available to purchase starting at $100.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
This bird is not for someone who thinks they are just sort of getting interested in birds. This bird will require someone who will work through his behavior issues and earn his trust using only trust building behavior modification and rewards.

***Information that is universal to every bird:

1) Birds are typically not family animals. They usually choose a favorite and at best you can expect them to tolerate everyone else.

2) Birds are not great with kids, dogs, other birds, and are not cuddly with everyone, nor can they really be trained to be. Birds are flock animals, who are social creatures that need to be in a communal area where they can see the rest of the family, or you may eperience serious vocalization and behavior problems. We’ve never met a bird who is great with kids, but we have met kids who are respectful of birds.

3) Birds bite. But, you shouldn’t “take the bite”. If you’re getting bit, you haven’t earned the trust of the bird, and are pushing the bird past his/her limits. You must figure out what the bird needs, and make what you’re asking of the bird more attractive than what they are already doing.

4) Birds are not “dominance” based creatures. Your only option for birds is to earn their trust. If they are, say…on top of a cage and don’t want to come down, that is where they feel safest, not a dominance thing. They are not trying to exert dominance, they just don’t want to come down. Your job as a parrot owner is to figure out what you can do to help them trust you, and whatever you are asking to be more attractive than what they are already doing.

5) NEVER send money over the internet for adoption with any individual or organization for the adoption of an animal you have not met in person. That is almost always a scam.
