Kieko
Timneh African Grey
This is what we know:
Kieko is a 25 year old male Timneh African Grey. He is a very intelligent bird with an impressive vocabulary and can put words into meaningful sentences. Kieko loves to communicate and will often let you know exactly what he wants, from asking for food to telling you when it is time for the dog to go outside. He even enjoys dancing by bobbing along with you.
Kieko has been well cared for his entire life and is fully feathered with a beautiful gray body and maroon colored tail. He enjoys spending time out of his cage, riding on a shoulder, and even has learned helpful behaviors like going potty on command. While he can sometimes be moody and may bite if he is unhappy, this is typical of many parrots and simply means he needs someone patient and understanding.
His favorite treats are fruits such as strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, raspberries, apples, and pears. He also enjoys sweet potatoes, pasta, and scrambled eggs as special snacks. He eats a diet of soft pellets, almonds, and fruit, though he has never been fond of vegetables. Kieko also loves toys and enrichment, though he can be wary of anything new placed in or around his cage.
Kieko has a special bond with men and may warm up faster to a male caregiver, though with patience and trust, he can bond with others as well. He enjoys being handled, especially if trust is built through hand feeding, and he adores cuddle time when he feels secure.
This affectionate, funny, and clever bird deserves a loving home with someone who will continue to give him fresh food, clean water, attention, and companionship.

***Information that is universal to every bird:
1) Birds are typically not family animals. They usually choose a favorite and at best you can expect them to tolerate everyone else.
2) Birds are not great with kids, dogs, other birds, and are not cuddly with everyone, nor can they really be trained to be. Birds are flock animals, who are social creatures that need to be in a communal area where they can see the rest of the family, or you may eperience serious vocalization and behavior problems. We’ve never met a bird who is great with kids, but we have met kids who are respectful of birds.
3) Birds bite. But, you shouldn’t “take the bite”. If you’re getting bit, you haven’t earned the trust of the bird, and are pushing the bird past his/her limits. You must figure out what the bird needs, and make what you’re asking of the bird more attractive than what they are already doing.
4) Birds are not “dominance” based creatures. Your only option for birds is to earn their trust. If they are, say…on top of a cage and don’t want to come down, that is where they feel safest, not a dominance thing. They are not trying to exert dominance, they just don’t want to come down. Your job as a parrot owner is to figure out what you can do to help them trust you, and whatever you are asking to be more attractive than what they are already doing.
5) NEVER send money over the internet for adoption with any individual or organization for the adoption of an animal you have not met in person. That is almost always a scam.
