Monty

This is what we know:

Monty is a classic Umbrella Cockatoo with a big personality, a goofy streak, and a heart that's waiting for the right person.

His early history is largely unknown after being surrendered to a private zoo, but he spent the last several years in a loving home where he received regular veterinary care, enjoyed a healthy diet of fresh vegetables, grains, and nuts, and continued to thrive.

Monty has a history of feather plucking from earlier in life, leaving him with a bare chest, but he has not actively plucked in years. He does have some mild arthritis, but otherwise he's in good health.

Like many Umbrella Cockatoos, Monty forms deep bonds with the people he trusts. He tends to prefer women and absolutely loves having his pin feathers scratched once you've earned his confidence. He's affectionate, enjoys being involved in whatever you're doing, and is happiest when he's part of the family.

Monty is an enthusiastic shredder. Give him fresh wood blocks, cardboard, palm toys, or anything safe to destroy, and he'll happily stay busy for hours. Keeping him supplied with shreddable toys is one of the best ways to keep him mentally stimulated and doing what cockatoos naturally love to do.

He isn't particularly fond of dogs, towels, blankets, or brooms, and like many cockatoos, convincing him that out-of-cage time has come to an end can sometimes become a negotiation.

Umbrella Cockatoos are intelligent, emotional, and incredibly rewarding companions, but they aren't the right fit for everyone. They thrive with people who understand their needs, appreciate their sensitivity, and are committed to building a relationship based on trust.

If you're looking for a loyal companion with decades of life experience, plenty of personality, and enough charm to keep you smiling every day, Monty may be the perfect addition to your family.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Cockatoos are incredibly loud. All family member should be on board, and they are not a good fit for apartment or condo living.

***Information that is universal to every bird:

1) Birds are typically not family animals. They usually choose a favorite and at best you can expect them to tolerate everyone else.

2) Birds are not great with kids, dogs, other birds, and are not cuddly with everyone, nor can they really be trained to be. Birds are flock animals, who are social creatures that need to be in a communal area where they can see the rest of the family, or you may eperience serious vocalization and behavior problems. We’ve never met a bird who is great with kids, but we have met kids who are respectful of birds.

3) Birds bite. But, you shouldn’t “take the bite”. If you’re getting bit, you haven’t earned the trust of the bird, and are pushing the bird past his/her limits. You must figure out what the bird needs, and make what you’re asking of the bird more attractive than what they are already doing.

4) Birds are not “dominance” based creatures. Your only option for birds is to earn their trust. If they are, say…on top of a cage and don’t want to come down, that is where they feel safest, not a dominance thing. They are not trying to exert dominance, they just don’t want to come down. Your job as a parrot owner is to figure out what you can do to help them trust you, and whatever you are asking to be more attractive than what they are already doing.

5) NEVER send money over the internet for adoption with any individual or organization for the adoption of an animal you have not met in person. That is almost always a scam.
