PEACHES

Peaches

Moluccan Cockatoo

This is Peaches.

This is what we know about him:

Peaches has had a fairly hard life up to this point, but somehow has managed to come through it with his sweetness and personality in tact, and all his feathers and his body in great shape.

Peaches is all the good and bad that a Moluccan Cockatoo is.

This bird needs to live with someone who can handle his noise, which is INCREDIBLE. He will need to be trained for separation anxiety, and you’ll need to be proactive with providing him things to destroy and play with and forage in your absence.

This bird can be more destructive than almost any other species and he’s fast.

Moluccans are super high strung, high energy, and they are incredibly needy.

If you’re not paying attention to him, he will scream his little face off until he gets the perceived need met. This will require behavior shaping.

If you haven’t already, we HIGHLY recommend Lara Joseph’s The Parrot Project for you to learn the basics of behavior. Cockatoos are typically not treat motivated, and instead are affection motivated, so to practice behavior modification for them, you will want to shape how YOU interact and touch your bird from the start.

Age: Unknown

Sex: Male

Prefers: Males or Females? Not sure it matters

Other Bird Aggressive? We haven’t let him interact with other birds.

Cage Aggressive? No. He’s more nervous.

Adoption Fee: $2000

Cage: He will require a super large cage - either a big Silverado, a double macaw cage, aviary or the largest macaw cage available.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
He is the loudest of all parrot species, and will scream to get what he wants.

All members of the family should be on board to bring this bird home.

M2’s are hard on those with sensory issues. If you have a person with sensory issues or autism in your home, it is imperative that you understand, you cannot shut this bird off. There is no off switch - only training. We do not recommend this species for those with sensory issues.

Hormones are a very real thing for cockatoos, you should know good/bad touch for cockatoos.

***Information that is universal to every bird:

1) Birds are typically not family animals. They usually choose a favorite and at best you can expect them to tolerate everyone else.

2) Birds are not great with kids, dogs, other birds, and are not cuddly with everyone, nor can they really be trained to be. Birds are flock animals, who are social creatures that need to be in a communal area where they can see the rest of the family, or you may eperience serious vocalization and behavior problems. We’ve never met a bird who is great with kids, but we have met kids who are respectful of birds.

3) Birds bite. But, you shouldn’t “take the bite”. If you’re getting bit, you haven’t earned the trust of the bird, and are pushing the bird past his/her limits. You must figure out what the bird needs, and make what you’re asking of the bird more attractive than what they are already doing.

4) Birds are not “dominance” based creatures. Your only option for birds is to earn their trust. If they are, say…on top of a cage and don’t want to come down, that is where they feel safest, not a dominance thing. They are not trying to exert dominance, they just don’t want to come down. Your job as a parrot owner is to figure out what you can do to help them trust you, and whatever you are asking to be more attractive than what they are already doing.

5) NEVER send money over the internet for adoption with any individual or organization for the adoption of an animal you have not met in person. That is almost always a scam.
