Polly

This is what we know:

Polly is a beautiful Congo African Grey who has already proven that, with patience and understanding, she can make incredible progress.

After arriving at Birds and Beaks, Polly found a wonderful home where she blossomed. She learned to enjoy life outside of a cage, regained confidence, and even began growing feathers back on her chest. Unfortunately, changing circumstances in the home made it no longer safe for her to stay, and her family made the incredibly difficult decision to return her so she could find the right fit.

Like many African Greys, Polly prefers to do things on her terms. She isn't a bird that understands "step up," but once she's comfortable with you, she's perfectly content being picked up and will happily lean into the people she trusts.

She enjoys spending her days exploring her play area, ringing her bell, dancing with her people, and showing off her impressive vocabulary. Fair warning, though... Polly occasionally has the mouth of a trucker pirate. She's been known to call people a "motherf***er"—sometimes while they're handing her a treat. We choose to believe it's a term of endearment. 😄

Polly is still learning that hands can be trusted, so she'll do best with someone who understands that relationships with parrots are built through patience, consistency, and allowing the bird to have a voice. She isn't looking for someone to change who she is—she's looking for someone who appreciates her exactly as she is while continuing to help her grow.

African Greys are incredibly intelligent birds that often form a deep bond with one special person. Polly would thrive in a calm home that understands the unique personality of the species and enjoys earning a Grey's trust one day at a time.

If you're looking for a thoughtful, independent companion with a wicked sense of humor and don't mind the occasional colorful commentary, Polly may just be your perfect match.

Age: 10ish - the original owner passed, but the family believes she’s around 10.

Sex: Female - has laid eggs in the past.

Prefers: Seems to prefer females.

Other Bird Aggressive? We haven’t allowed this bird to interact with other for their safety.

***Information that is universal to every bird:

1) Birds are typically not family animals. They usually choose a favorite and at best you can expect them to tolerate everyone else.

2) Birds are not great with kids, dogs, other birds, and are not cuddly with everyone, nor can they really be trained to be. Birds are flock animals, who are social creatures that need to be in a communal area where they can see the rest of the family, or you may eperience serious vocalization and behavior problems. We’ve never met a bird who is great with kids, but we have met kids who are respectful of birds.

3) Birds bite. But, you shouldn’t “take the bite”. If you’re getting bit, you haven’t earned the trust of the bird, and are pushing the bird past his/her limits. You must figure out what the bird needs, and make what you’re asking of the bird more attractive than what they are already doing.

4) Birds are not “dominance” based creatures. Your only option for birds is to earn their trust. If they are, say…on top of a cage and don’t want to come down, that is where they feel safest, not a dominance thing. They are not trying to exert dominance, they just don’t want to come down. Your job as a parrot owner is to figure out what you can do to help them trust you, and whatever you are asking to be more attractive than what they are already doing.

5) NEVER send money over the internet for adoption with any individual or organization for the adoption of an animal you have not met in person. That is almost always a scam.
