This is what we know:

Sparty is an 8-year-old Black-headed Caique who has a LOT going on in that little body.

She loves being held and cuddled, especially at night, loves having her pin feathers crunched, and she has a whole list of tricks she’ll happily do for a treat.

Tell her “bang” and she’ll roll over and play dead. She’ll high five. She’ll do Ring Around the Rosie. If you sing “If You’re Happy and You Know It,” she’ll click her beak. Turn her upside down and say “tick tock” and she’ll swing back and forth like a tiny clock.

She talks too. She says “good boy,” “why,” “what are you doing,” laughs at appropriate times, whistles, catcalls, and has been known to tell another bird to “shut up.” (Fair!)

So. She’s got personality. 😂

She is also still a Caique, which means she can be cuddly and hilarious one minute and morph into a Sour Patch Psychopath and decide somebody needs to bleed the next. She can be nippy, but her moods are pretty readable. It's all in the eyes.

She does not like dogs and has reliably tried to go after them in the past, so she’d probably be happiest in a dog-free home.

Sparty is plucked on her belly and in a few other areas. We don’t know yet how that’s going to play out long-term, so we’re not going to promise what her feathers will look like in the future. A good diet, enrichment, routine, and a home that understands Caique energy are going to matter.

She’s funny, busy, affectionate, smart, and a little ridiculous.

Which is pretty much exactly what a Caique is supposed to be.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: She is a caique, which means she is a rough player, and doesn’t read off a script for how to behave. Be prepared. :)

***Information that is universal to every bird:

1) Birds are typically not family animals. They usually choose a favorite and at best you can expect them to tolerate everyone else.

2) Birds are not great with kids, dogs, other birds, and are not cuddly with everyone, nor can they really be trained to be. Birds are flock animals, who are social creatures that need to be in a communal area where they can see the rest of the family, or you may eperience serious vocalization and behavior problems. We’ve never met a bird who is great with kids, but we have met kids who are respectful of birds.

3) Birds bite. But, you shouldn’t “take the bite”. If you’re getting bit, you haven’t earned the trust of the bird, and are pushing the bird past his/her limits. You must figure out what the bird needs, and make what you’re asking of the bird more attractive than what they are already doing.

4) Birds are not “dominance” based creatures. Your only option for birds is to earn their trust. If they are, say…on top of a cage and don’t want to come down, that is where they feel safest, not a dominance thing. They are not trying to exert dominance, they just don’t want to come down. Your job as a parrot owner is to figure out what you can do to help them trust you, and whatever you are asking to be more attractive than what they are already doing.

5) NEVER send money over the internet for adoption with any individual or organization for the adoption of an animal you have not met in person. That is almost always a scam.
